Tight Vagina No Intercourse
By Joan Price | 18 September 2021
"I’m 72. I have not been able to have intercourse with my husband for the last five years. It seems like my vaginal canal is very small. I’m not sure I want to use dilators."
"I’ve gone to physical therapy where they’ve given me breathing exercises to relax my vaginal muscles. I believe it’s more than just a tight muscle in my canal. Advice?"
Joan answers:
You need to get the cause of your discomfort diagnosed so that you can decide with your health provider on the best treatment. There are specialists called “pelvic floor therapists” who understand how to diagnose and treat vaginal pain.
You might have tight vaginal muscles (high-tone pelvic floor muscle dysfunction) that are contracted and unable to relax, as your physical therapist suggested (though the solution needs to be more than breathing exercises!), or there might be another condition. You need a solid diagnosis. Ask your health provider for a referral to a pelvic floor therapist.
Here’s an excellent resource for you: The Vaginal Renewal™ Program from A Woman’s Touch Sexuality Resource Center. They’ve also developed the FeMani vibrating wands for use with this program.
